Is cosmetic surgery and plastic surgery the same thing?
Plastic surgeons are trained to perform cosmetic surgery and reconstructive surgery.
Cosmetic surgeons are not necessarily trained as plastic surgeons.
Cosmetic surgery is mainly elective and plastic surgery can sometimes be an emergency.
Both disciplines require many years of training and you should ask your physician about his/her qualifications and training. Please remember only plastic surgeons can be trained as both plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons.
Does insurance cover plastic surgical procedures?
Yes, many plastic/cosmetic procedures can be covered by insurance plans. procedures such as breast reduction, certain post gastric bypass reconstructive procedures such as removal of excess skin around the belly, cleft lip and palates, keloids, scars that may involve eye sight, opening and closing mouth, scars around the nose and ears and bed sores, some insurances may even cover revision surgery for previous breast procedures and all cover breast reconstruction after breast cancer. Please consult your own insurance benefits manual before seeing your primary care doctor for a referral to the plastic surgeon.
I have age spots on my hands, what can I do about it?
There are many options for age spots on the hand, alpha hydroxy acid gels, beta hydroxy acid gels, hydroquinone creams, liquid nitrogen, laser therapy and chemical peels have proven to the be the best in terms of results thus far. please avoid direct sun when possible and please see your plastic surgeon and or dermatologist and ask lots of questions before you and your plastic surgeon decide on a procedure that is best for you.
How do hair transplants work?
Hair transplants have come a long way and now we can transplant individual follicles of hair from the back of your head to an area that your surgeon maps out through several visits prior to the procedure. the follicles are placed one by one into the area and left alone. most of the follicles will fall out during first month and then the new hair will grow slowly over the next 4-6 months. the growth is about quarter to half inch per month. more than one session may be required and medicine like propecia or minoxidil may be prescribed. please consult your hair replacement professional so you may get the best plan for your hair loss.
I am overweight and will liposuction help me lose weight?
Liposuction, selective lipectomy, or suction lipectomy are all similar procedures. they are not designed for a person that is obese to lose weight. it is more for a person that has some problem areas and needs contouring. according to the latest safety guidelines a person can have about 5 liters of fat taken out on an outpatient basis. anything more than five liters may require hospitalization for adequate monitoring of fluids (i.e. urine output and cardiac function). Remember, liposuction does cause some contour irregularities and some lumpy bumpy areas, bruising and you may find some clothes fit you loosely and others may have no change. it may take several weeks to a several months before you see your final results. Please consult with your plastic surgeon to see if you are a good candidate for a liposuction procedure
I tend to bruise easily, is it okay for me to have plastic surgery?
There are many reasons that people have bruising, the first is simple and is due to injury or trauma.
Other reasons are usually due to medication, blood thinners, asa, etc. the last important reason is genetic due to lack of proteins or factors that may inhibit blot clots from forming and these diseases are sometimes contraindicated for elective cosmetic procedures.
Many young women tend to bruise easily and this doesn't mean they have a medical condition, they need to be screened carefully, consider their family history before considering elective cosmetic surgery.
Your plastic surgeon is well trained and can handle any question you may have and can certainly get you to the right physician to help you if you have a bleeding condition such as hemophilia or von willebrands, ehlers danlos, immune disorders or leukemia.
